Russia, the Asymmetric Threat to the United States: A Potent Mixture of Energy and Missiles

  • Russia has proved oil reserves of 60 billion barrels, as well as 13.4 billion barrels of recoverable heavy oil, and 33.7 billion barrels of recoverable bitumen
  • The Arctic holds between 40 and 160 billion barrels of oil
  • Russia is the World's second largest oil exporter, at 7 million barrels per day
  • In August 2009, Russian output hit 9.97 million barrels a day
  • Russia is beginning to transition production away from Western Siberia:
    • Priobskoye (W. Siberia) already produces 32.4 million metric tons annually. It is forecasted to rise to 48 million metric tons (only 15% depleted). South Priobskoye is expected to yield 330,000 bpd in 2010
    • Urna and Ust-Tegus fields (Tyumen, W. Siberia) began production in February 2009.  Production of 1.5 million metric tons is expected this year. Output is forecasted to reach 9 million metric tons by 2020
    • Yuzhno Khylchuyu production began in August 2008. It is expected to have peak output of 150,00 bpd (7.5 million metric tons per annum)
    • Verkhnechonskoye began production in October 2008. It is expected to have peak output of 180,00 bpd
    • Vankor production began in August 2009. It is expected to produce 510,000 bpd (25.5 million metric tons per year)
